My Solitudes and My Lights, the Manager’s Blues

Sous une allure etincelante, derriere se cache une verite plus contrastée

Alone in their role

Alone, alone in the decision.

Late at night, after spending the day in meetings, solving problems, listening, prioritizing, defending, justifying.

In the evening, you come back home, tired, to be with your family. And during this late, delayed meal, you are there without being there. Because after this meal, and a brief discussion where your soul is not present, You have to go to finish a budget, an evaluation, prepare a meeting or a presentation.

And all this, you do it, justify it on the altar of commitment to the company, because that’s how one can progress. Out of a sense of duty, out of a constant and powerful pressure that you must always do more, here and now.

Alone in handling the pressure

And this litany that runs through your head, no mistakes, Especially, no mistakes, no judgment errors, no presentation errors, no interpretation errors.

As a manager, you must be good, constant, reliable, positive, committed, set an example, smile, laugh, and know how to convey strong messages. You are approachable, available, you are aware of everything happening in your group, you are informed of all the challenges, because you have to showcase that you are on top of everything.

Alone in caring for your employees

You must detect the suffering, the problems of your employees.

You must, because you know what it is to lose an employee, you know the sting of that mistake, that mistake that cost someone dearly.

So yes,

it’s promised,

  • more attention,
  • more precision,
  • more documentation
  • to meet everyone’s expectations.

And in the evening,

Alone.

Alone in front of your computer, you prepare yourself. Or You think you are preparing yourself. But It is not the case, it is no longer the case, because without seeing it, without knowing it, these efforts, these commitments distance you, distance you from everything you hold dear, distance you from yourself.

And so, your approach, your sense of humanity withers, diminishes. And one day, you look in the mirror at the face of a person you think you know, but you do not recognize.

One day, this tension, this fatigue, this obsession with being aligned with everyone makes you no longer see what you must be, who you must be, who you are.

That day, you will face a decision.

Continue Or Resist.

And this decision, only you can make it, only you must make it. `

And in this decision to resist, it is to reconnect with who you are, with your values, with what is important. It is to become aware of the passing time, to anchor yourself in the present. It is to rediscover this sense of the essential.

And so, relearn to say no, to focus on what makes a difference.

Resist

Resist by listening, completely. How?

  • Be quiet.
  • Let the silence speak,
  • Rephrase to better understand,
  • Ask open-ended questions to go further.

During this listening, no screens, no barriers, be there, no time constraints, or if there is a constraint, share it.

Resist by fostering discussions in your group, debates, help the silent one to come forward, help the impatient one to listen, learn the art of co-construction. [1]

Resist by putting yourself at the service of the group, to help them develop this common understanding.

Resist by sharing information, the stakes And so you will find solutions, because you listen, truly, you give space.

Together

And so,

Together to guide without imposing, [2]

Together to lead the group, [3]

Together to develop plans and budgets [4 & 5]

Together to define salaries [6]

Together, we support each other, we develop team resilience. [7 & 8]

So yes, this alternate path exists,

The alternate path is to know yourself, know your reactions, know how to manage your emotions [9] and with this self-awareness, to better welcome the other, develop stronger, more united, resilient teams and thus effective, creative, and attractive.

The alternate path is this understanding that together we go further, not as a slogan but as a deep truth anchored in you.

The alternate path is to be present here and now, listening 100%, contributing 100% and by living this, making others live it.

This path, I discovered it in small steps, sometimes I walked it then I got lost. And, today I follow this path, I still get lost sometimes but never for long, because I know how to trust my internal compass. When your heart is aligned with your head, you know you are going in the right direction.

You are looking for this path, contact me, together we will find it, and we will walk it.
